Instructor: Wayne Laubscher
DOB: 10 June 1981
Nationality: South African
Hobbies: Study of Anatomy, massage, cricket, rugby
Goals: To push my body beyond what I think it is capable of.
Goals as an instructor:
To change my students’ lives by giving them the tools they need to make the change themselves.
Instructing Techniques:
I aim to train my students both physically and mentally. I will explain the reason behind every technique; I will try to give a real-life example and will answer every question asked. Knowledge is half the battle and no question is stupid.
History:
10 Years ago I was bored of going to the gym and I was looking for other ways to keep fit. I played league action cricket which was amazingly fun but there was no drive in it.
A friend of mine had previously introduced me to kung fu and I thought this might be a good time to look into it. After much research I contacted Si-Fu Frank and made arrangements to come try out a class. He did warn me that the class had been training for 4 months already and I would possibly be pushed physically very hard. I assured him that I wouldn’t struggle as I was going to gym and playing cricket 2 – 3 times a week. What a wake-up call! 10 minutes in I was sweating, 20 minutes in I was panting grossly, and 40 minutes in I was asking where to throw up. Luckily I kept my lunch in and made it through the class. I was hooked.
For 4 years I did not miss a single class and by then I realized this might be something that I would be interested in teaching. I asked Si-Fu if I could help with teaching the beginner classes and he assigned me to Si-Sook George Wolhuter who began molding my mind in how teaching is so much different than learning. Having to teach means that you have to learn so much better and my training accelerated rapidly. By learning to teach I was learning to learn. I was eventually given my own class which I took much pride in teaching.
A few years passed and my wife fell pregnant. After much internal debating I decided to take some time off when my son was born. After being off training for 6 months in 2009 I had some good time to reflect on where my life needed to go and I realized that I needed to be teaching kung fu again. I missed the training and my students sorely and I knew that my purpose in life was to help others change theirs through kung fu.
At the end of 2009 I returned to my training under Si-Fu Frank and explained to him where I wanted to go with my training. With his blessing and support I started a pilot school from a community centre in fourways and have since moved into the All Saints Centre in Olivedale.
